Capacity Increase and Modernization Project of Istanbul A CCPP
Capacity Increase and Modernization Project of Istanbul A CCPP
The Istanbul A Natural Gas Combined Cycle Power Plant, with an installed capacity of 1350 MWe, has been in operation since 1988, continuing its activities for approximately 37 years. The plant is now approaching the end of its economic life.
The main reasons for initiating a capacity increase and modernization project are as follows:
• Increased Natural Gas Consumption and Production Costs: Due to the age of the existing units, they operate with significantly lower efficiency compared to today’s modern technologies. This leads to increased natural gas consumption and, consequently, higher unit production costs that are no longer sustainable.
• Difficulty in Procuring Spare Parts and Materials: Spare parts, consumables, and equipment required for regular maintenance, rehabilitation, and frequent breakdowns are no longer in production or readily available in the market, making timely procurement difficult and affecting operational reliability.

Project Overview:
Within the existing plant area, and by leveraging the current national grid connection infrastructure, it is planned to construct new unit(s) with a minimum installed capacity of 800–900 MWe and an overall efficiency of at least 62%. Through this capacity expansion:
• Energy production efficiency will be significantly improved,
• Natural gas consumption will be reduced,
• Unit production costs will be lowered,
• Operational disruptions due to maintenance or failure will be minimized.
