In order to meet the increasing electrical energy demand of our country and to utilize 4.5 billion tons of low-calorie lignite coal in the Afşin-Elbistan region, our power plant with a total installed power of 4x360 MW=1,440 MW, each of which will be fed from the basin with a reserve capacity of 544 million tons in the Çöllolar sector was included in the investment program in 1996. A contract was signed with the Mitsubishi - Babcock - Enka - Gama Tekfen Tokar (GTT) Ordinary Partnership Consortium led by MITSUBISHI on 06.08.1998, and the work actually started on 01.06.2000. The power plant, the construction of which started on 01.06.2000, was put into commercial operation in 2006. The type of coal used in our power plant is low calorie lignite coal. The calorie of the coal used varies between 950-1500 kcal/kg. The design annual production capacity of our power plant is 9.36 billion kWh.
