Karkamış Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant was built on the Euphrates River within the scope of the Southeastern Anatolia Project (GAP), 80 km from Gaziantep city center and 14 km from Karkamış district center. It has a total installed power of 189 MW with 6 generators, each of which is 31.5 MW, and its annual generation capacity is estimated as 652 million kWh.
The construction of the Karkamış Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant, located in the Euphrates Basin, started on 07.12.1995 and was completed and commissioned in 1999.
The body volume of the dam, which was built in clay core fill type, is 2.100.000 m³, its height from the stream bed is 29 m, and its body length is 1.608 m. The lake volume is 156.9 hm³ and the lake area at normal water level is 28.4 km². Right and left shore protection sets were built in the reservoir area of the dam, which produces energy, and the operating level of the dam lake, which is at 336 m elevation, was increased to 340 m, and it was aimed to protect the dwellings and agricultural land under the dam lake.
